Dojo terms and holidays in 2017

  • Term 1 (9 Jan – 31 Mar): dojo closed 26-28 Jan (Australia Day)
  • Term 2 (1 Apr – 30 Jun): dojo closed 15-17 Apr (Easter), 22-25 Apr (Anzac), 10-12 Jun (Queen’s Birthday)
  • Term 3 (1 Jul – 18 Sep): dojo closed 8 Jul (Gasshuku)
  • Term 4 (19 Sep – 17 Dec*): dojo closed 30 Sep – 2 Oct (Labour Day), 17 Dec – 7 Jan (end of year break; *children’s classes conclude on 9 Dec)
  • The dojo reopens for the new year on 8 January 2018 with all programs resuming that week

 

Beginners classes

  • 5 classes per week
  • suitable for adults and teens (no upper age limit)
  • no experience necessary – appropriate for all levels of students
  • fun and gentle introduction to basic Aikido principles and techniques with emphasis on sensitivity and ukemi (learning how to receive techniques safely through rolls and falls)

 

Intermediate classes

  • 2 classes per week
  • recommended for adults graded 3rd kyu and above – higher-level ukemi and weapons skills required
  • faster, more dynamic practice incorporating a range of weapons to explore and illustrate the space and lines in the movements
  • emphasis on ukemi, sensitivity and adaptability to our partner’s movements

 

Research classes

  • 1 class per week – the absolute essence of the AKI style!
  • recommended for adults & teens graded 5th kyu and above
  • classes are guided by senior instructors but there is no formal instruction – each student must ‘find their own Way’
  • dynamic, challenging and infinitely rewarding classes with emphasis on spontaneity, self-expression, exploration and freedom in movement

 

Friendship training

  • first Tuesday of every month
  • adults and teenagers of all levels practise together in the spirit of friendship and exchange
  • teaching is shared by different instructors present on the night
  • always a very fun and energetic class, followed by social dinner in the local area

 

Kids classes

  • 2 classes per week
  • recommended for students approximately 6-11 years old
  • use of laughter, imagery and games to introduce basic Aikido principles in a safe and fun environment

Teenagers classes

  • 1 dedicated teens-only class per week plus 4 mixed teens and adults classes
  • recommended for students approximately 11-17 years old
  • playful and energetic practice introducing Aikido principles and non-violent conflict resolution in a safe and affirming space
