The Dojo

Aikido Sydney City is a full-time, traditional Japanese dojo located in Chippendale in the inner-city suburbs of Sydney, a short walk from the University of Sydney and the University of Technology (UTS). The moment you enter, you are struck by the energy of the space and the peaceful atmosphere inside. We treat the dojo with the utmost love and respect, and this creates a very special, safe and inspiring environment in which to learn and grow.

A beautiful Japanese scroll, a gift from Takeda Shihan, hangs at the front of the dojo and reminds us that the ‘Way’ is ‘harmony’. Lush green plants adorn the walls and thrive in the natural light which bathes and floods the space. A custom-built sprung floor with 160m2 of permanently laid tatami mats provides the very best support, comfort and protection for our bodies while we train. At the end of an invigorating class, we thank our friends and head out into the world, full of energy and joy, and continue our practice in our daily lives.

Heaven is right where you are standing, and that is the place to train

A brief history

The group began in 2003 when Berin Mackenzie returned from years of intensive study in Japan with Takeda Shihan. Committed to sharing the teachings he’d received, Berin Sensei opened his first dojo – Aikido Kenkyukai Bondi Beach – inside the Bondi Pavilion on world famous Bondi Beach. For 5 years, a small but spirited group continued to grow, with a number of these early students going on to become teachers. In 2008, the group relocated to the inner city and adopted the name Aikido Kenkyukai Sydney City, making its home in the Woolloomooloo PCYC and then Victoria Park Pool.

In early 2010, it was finally time to take a leap of faith and create our very own dojo space. Six months of intensive renovations followed, in which our students and teachers gave generously and tirelessly of their time and energy, working 7 days a week and often well into the night, in order to make our shared dream manifest. On the 24th September 2010, our beloved mentor Takeda Shihan and special guests and friends from all over the world came to together to celebrate the grand opening of our new dojo and the realisation of a life-long dream.
