What is Aikido?
Aikido is a Japanese martial art focusing on
harmonising with others. Suitable for both men and women, Aikido is both mentally stimulating and
physically challenging, yet safe and fun to learn.
About our club
Aikido Kenkyukai Ryde-Eastwood Dojo is conveniently located in the heart of West Ryde close to the train
station (Northern line) and Victoria Road buses.
Aikido classes are held at the Family Fitness and Self Defence Academy on Victoria Road (opposite the
McDonalds and Shell Service Station). The Ryde-Eastwood Dojo is a short distance from Gladesville, Putney, and Top Ryde to the East; Meadowbank, Rhodes and Concord to the South; Eastwood, Epping and North Ryde to
the North, and Rydalmere through to Parramatta to the West.
Classes are led by Jeff Standen (3rd dan), a member of
Aikido Kenkyukai International (AKI), an affiliation of Aikido dojos throughout Japan,
Australia, NZ, Canada, USA, Chile & Uruguay, inspired by the teachings of
Takeda Yoshinobu Shihan, 8th dan. AKI is affiliated with Aiki-kai Japan. Jeff has been training Aikido since 1988 and is a fully accredited instructor with the
Martial Arts Industry Association .
Training fees
Class Fees: $15.00 per class or $8.00 for students / hardship
Annual Membership Fees: All practitioners need to be members of AKI ($80/ year)
A first-month temporary membership of $20 is available for beginners and for visitors. All visitors
are welcome.
Thinking of training?
If you're interested in training we ask that you come along to observe one class, so you become aware
of the nature of the practice and its potential risks. If you already have Aikido experience you are
welcome to join, though we still recommend you observe some of a class as there are many styles and
methods of practise. By first watching, you avoid disappointment or frustration through expectation, and
minimize disruption to those who choose to practise this way.
Membership requirements
Aikido Kenkyukai NSW Incorporated is a member of the Martial Arts Industry Association (MAIA). By
abiding by the MAIA requirements, participants can feel confident in their instructors and the Aikido
Kenkyukai organisation. In 30 years of practice here in Australia, we have never had a serious accident or injury. However, the MAIA National Code of Practice requires that a Membership Agreement be completed by
any person seeking martial arts instruction. Therefore, when applying for membership of any AKI NSW Inc
dojo, prospective students are first required to observe a class. The following forms must then be
completed and handed to your instructor, along with your preliminary membership fee and regular class fee, prior to participating in your first class:
* Aikido Kenkyukai Membership Application
* Martial Arts Contract
* Pre-participation Questionnaire
