Aikido, the Art of Peace

Aiki is the power of harmony, of all beings, all
things working together. Relentlessly train
yourself, followers of the Way

Ueshiba Morihei Sensei (1883-1969)

The Japanese martial art of Aikido is a beautiful and
dynamic form of moving meditation and non-violent
self defense. It was developed last century by the late
Ueshiba Morihei Sensei, also known as 'O-Sensei' meaning 'great teacher'.

O-Sensei mastered various martial forms including Jujutsu (unarmed defence), Kenjutsu (sword) and Sojutsu (spear), and was regarded as an invincible martial artist. However, he was also a deeply spiritual man and the duality of victory and defeat, winner and loser, dissatisfied him greatly. Of what value was victory if it came at the expense of another?

grappling, joint locks and throws whereby one blends and harmonizes with an opponent’s ki energy to neutralize their attack, without necessitating the use of physical strength or brute force to defeat or injure them. This new art came to be known as 'Aikido' which translates as 'the Way of harmony' and is often called the Art of Peace.

What can Aikido do for you?

Aikido enables you to deal with any attack in a calm and centred way using the principle of non-resistance and is based on a spirit of non-aggression. In its highest form, it goes beyond the physical aspects and connects you to the deeper, underlying movements of nature and the universe. It can be practised by both men and women of any age as a form of exercise, martial art, meditation or spiritual training and is a wonderful path for children. Practise is done at your own pace and with respect to your individual abilities. There are no competitions or contests.

Regular Aikido training will improve your co-ordination, balance, energy flow, general fitness, awareness, centeredness and self-confidence, as well as developing non-violent conflict resolution and self-defense skills. It will provide opportunities for international travel and cultural exchange, and open doors to friendships that will last a lifetime.

If you’re interested in dynamic, non-violent martial training and exploration of movement in a safe, friendly and inspiring environment then our Sydney City Dojo is for you! No experience is necessary and you're welcome to start at any time!

The secret of Aikido
is not in how you move your feet,
it is how you move your mind.
I'm not teaching you martial techniques,
I'm teaching you nonviolence...

If all you think about is winning,
you will in fact lose everything.
Know that you and your opponents are treading the same path.
Envelop adversaries with love, entrust yourself to the natural flow of things,
unify ki, body and mind, and efface the boundary between self and other.
This opens unlimited possiblities...

Those who are enlightened to these principles are always victorious.
Winning without contending is true victory, a victory over oneself,
a victory swift and sure.
Victory is to harmonize self and other, to link yourself to the Divine,
to yoke yourself to Divine Love, to become the universe itself.
